Education in design and textiles

All my life I have applied myself to creative pursuits. A solid grounding at college enabled me to expand my knowledge of pattern making, screen-printing and dyeing, fabricating textiles, sourcing material, and constructing garments with a decade of practical experience.

Commitment to ethics

The role nature can play in textile design has been a consistent focus of my work, along with a thorough understanding of how and where textiles are made by craftsmen, artisans, and individuals.

The story of clothes

I have always been fascinated by vintage clothes and how fashion relates to history, women's lives, and subcultures, embracing both high fashion and indigenous dress. To extend my knowledge I have poured through museum archives and taken every opportunity to visit public collections, exhibitions, and vintage stores.

Fibers, drawing, and multimedia

While majoring in drawing and printmaking I became increasingly drawn to fashion. My unique botanical fur jackets and natural dye screen-prints were the subjects of New York gallery exhibitions.

International experience

I grew up in New York with dual family traditions of art collecting and dealing. After studying in the US and in Berlin, I have traveled across the world in search of unique textile and costume traditions.

Relationships

I have always endeavored to establish solid links to talented artisans in each place I have visited, as well as building relationships online. This experience, for example, enabled me to source Jane Birkin’s basket two years before the design was taken up by the mass market.

The future

I shall continue to explore how existing but under-appreciated techniques from across the world, both old and new, may be adapted to contemporary fashion. One of the most exciting challenges I look forward to meeting is costume design for film and theater.
